Reinvented Cities is an art direction and photography project inspired by Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino. In this literary work, Calvino imagines a series of fictional cities, each named after a woman, and described through poetic, symbolic language. This project reinterprets those imaginary cities by translating their abstract qualities into staged portraits of real women. Each photograph embodies the soul of a specific city through careful styling, location selection, lighting, and composition aiming to capture the emotion, atmosphere, and metaphorical meaning behind each narrative. The creative process involved deep textual analysis, moodboarding, casting models whose presence could reflect the city’s spirit, and designing each scene with attention to textures, color palettes, and posture. The resulting series blends visual storytelling with literary interpretation, inviting viewers to see architecture as identity, and women as the poetic embodiment of imagined spaces. This project allowed me to explore the boundaries between art direction, photography and literature, while reinforcing the power of concept-driven visuals to evoke emotion and narrative.
